Shabazz Palaces

Shabazz Palaces

Shabazz Palaces is a Seattle based Hip-Hop collective formed by Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler formerly of Digable Planets and Tendai “Baba” Maraire. They are the first Hip-Hop artist to be assigned the Indie Sub Pop label. While they are generally classified under the Hip- Hop genre,  their music is elusive and undefinable, incorporating elements of Psychedelia, African Roots, Jazz and Experimental Electronic. Basically the music of Shabazz Palaces reflects the personality of Butler who offers no promo shots, no social networking sites, no interviews and no press releases . He prefers to remain enigmatic and let his music talk about what he stands for. The compositions are moody, edgy and eerie and provide a surreal backdrop to Butler’s trippy, echoed, message like vocals. For any of you who make the generalization that hip hop is sexist, drug fueled or profane ,please listen to the artistic offerings of Shabazz Palaces.
